Photonic Band Gap Materials: A Semiconductor for Light
نویسندگان
چکیده
Light in certain engineered dielectric microstructures can flow in a way similar to electrical currents in semiconductor chips. These microstructures represent a new frontier in the field of optics. They provide a foundation for the development of novel micro-photonic devices and the integration of such devices into an optical microchip. Glossary: Photonics: the science of moulding the flow of light Band Gap: a range of frequencies or energies where propagating modes of a wave are absent Photonic Crystal: a non-light-absorbing material with a refractive index which exhibits periodic modulation in at least two orthogonal spatial directions PBG Material: a non-lightabsorbing material which contains a band gap for electromagnetic waves propagating in all directions Light Localization: a state in which light of a particular frequency is completely confined to a small, finite region of space and cannot propagate away except through some nonlinear interaction.

We present a theoretical roadmap for three-dimensional optical waveguide networks in holographically defined, diamondlike photonic band gap PBG materials. A fully 3D waveguide network is demonstrated through broadband 100–200 nm , single-mode waveguiding in air, coupled with sharp bends in three dimensions with minimal backscattering. Optimal waveguides in the in-plane x and y directions are sh...

Photonic band structures for both electric and magnetic polarizations of the electrom...
